This guide brings together all the best practice advice for keeping hens: perimeter hedges to shelter from the wind, clusters of trees to encourage hens to explore their outdoor space, and inside, nesting boxes, perches, bedding and proper ventilation for a healthy living environment.

Animal welfare also rests on five fundamental freedoms: ensuring hens always have food and water available, ensuring they feel comfortable, ensuring they are in good health, ensuring they live in a calm and peaceful environment, and ensuring they are free to express their natural behaviour.
